Creating new generations of Opera Singers

My teaching begins with the individual student. Every voice is different, and I believe that effective pedagogy must respond to the student's particular instrument, experience, goals, and stage of development.

I emphasize healthy vocal production, breath management, resonance, alignment, registration, diction, and vocal flexibility while helping students develop an understanding of how these elements work together.

At the same time, I encourage students not to separate technique from artistry. A technically beautiful sound has limited meaning if it does not communicate something to an audience.

I therefore encourage students to ask questions about every piece they sing: Who am I? What do I want? What are the circumstances of the character or text? What is the composer asking me to communicate? How can my musical choices serve the words?

My own experience performing repertoire ranging from opera and operetta to art song, sacred music, and large-scale orchestral works has reinforced the importance of versatility.

Students should learn to adapt their voices and interpretive approaches to different musical styles while maintaining healthy and consistent vocal technique..
